Torment Wiki

Soego is a Dustman on the ground floor of the Mortuary. He works there as a guide. Later, he can be found on a mission to convert the citizens of the Dead Nations.

He is, in fact, a wererat who had recently contracted lycanthropy which is hinted multiple times before the reveal:

  • TNO remarks that he appears sleepless and ill;
  • the fact that he is immune to being strangled (unlike the other guards) or even killed in human form;
  • Vaxis mentions that he likes talking to rats if asked;
  • Sere, who says he was shaken up after one of his friends was attacked and torn to pieces by rats in the Hive;
  • Emoric telling TNO that he fled the Mortuary unexpectedly (and not on missionary work like he claims).

In the Mortuary[]

Soego has the key to the entrance of the Mortuary, and can unlock the gate for The Nameless One (this rewards 500 XP). Unlike the other Dustmen, he is sympathetic to the story that TNO had been mistakenly interred, but will know that Adahn does not exist. He also accepts claiming to be lost or mentioning Dhall or Deionarra.

Telling Soego about Vaxis rewards 250 XP. (This can not be done if TNO has already lied to Vaxis and ordered him to leave.)

If TNO has returned to Vaxis to ask about Soego ,and learned about Soego's habit of speaking to rats, mentioning this to him will cause him to attack.

Telling Soego that TNO is lost will prompt him to call the guards, but he can be dissuaded from it with 11 Charisma.

TNO also has the option of snapping his neck (requires 13 Dexterity), but this fails to kill him unlike the other guards, and results in combat.

If killed or pick-pocketed, the following items can be found on Soego's person:

After TNO leaves the Mortuary, Soego disappears (if he wasn't killed), supposedly on a self-imposed mission for the Dustmen. Emoric has a quest to find out where Soego has gone, should TNO ask him to join the faction.

In the Dead Nations[]

After TNO and his party are captured by the undead in the Dead Nations, he is taken to a small chamber where Soego is also kept. Soego explains that he is a missionary here because the undead here are moved by passions that prevent their attaining the True Death.

Here, TNO can rest while Soego is alive. (After his death, that role is taken over by Hargrimm.)

If TNO is trying to leave the Dead Nations, Hargrimm's second quest is to help him get rid of Soego, whom he can't remove because of the Dead Truce which prevents undead from harming Dustmen unless they attack first. (See Hargrimm for details.)

Soego can be told of the Doubtful Skeleton nearby, and he will immediately leave to find his new convert. With his possessions now unprotected, TNO can examine the Metal Slab he's been sleeping on, and find his journal. This journal reveals Soego's true nature: a Wererat who came to the Dead Nations to spy on them for Many-as-One, who hopes to gain some of the Dead Nations' territory.

TNO can either confront him and tell him he's read his journal, to which Soego immediately turns into a Wererat and attacks. (He is worth 270 XP.) Or the information can be relayed to Hargrimm instead, leading to a cutscene where the skeleton priest sentences him to life imprisonment and Soego tries to attack him. The Dead Truce now broken, Hargrimm then strikes him down with lightning.

He leaves behind some coppers and Soego's Skull, which can be useful when dealing with Lothar later. News of his fate can then be relayed to Emoric to complete the quest to join the Dustmen.

After learning about his allegiance, TNO can name-drop him to Mantuok in the Warrens of Thought for access to Many-as-One. If TNO reports to him that the Silent King is dead, he'll direct him to Many-as-One for a reward (regardless of previous knowledge or dialogue), but this does not affect anything other than alignment and the option to name-drop him to Mantuok (which can also be gained from reading his journal).

Conversations[]

The conversation with Soego upon entering the Dead Nations can have many different additional lines based on previous events:

If TNO had not met or heard of him or met him in the Mortuary: "Ah, another member of the living. Most are slain by the ghouls, this far into the catacombs; you are fortunate."

If TNO has already made a deal with Many-as-One: "Ah, someone to aid our cause! I, as an agent of Many-as-One, was told of your coming. We need you to try and find a way into the throne room of the Silent King and kill him. Do this, and Many-as-One will reward you."

If TNO met him in the Mortuary:

If TNO took the quest to find him from Emoric: "Soego...Emoric wanted to know where you were."

If Soego died in the Mortuary: "But...I thought I killed you." "The wound you struck was not a mortal one. I recovered quickly...and found that I would like to distance myself from the Mortuary." "Aren't you angry?" "No...should I be? I am somewhat disappointed that it was not my time to leave this place. Nonetheless, you should not return to the Mortuary, for many of my factotums would not be pleased to see you."

Alignment[]

  • Lawful: Telling Soego TNO woke up on a slab upstairs.
  • Evil: Telling Soego about Vaxis, after having vowed to Vaxis not to do it. [Confirmation needed]
  • Chaotic: Telling him that the Silent King is dead, after promising Hargrimm to keep it a secret.
