Stores in Planescape: Torment allow The Nameless One to buy, sell, identify and steal items.

Store Characteristics[]

At stores, The Nameless One can buy items. Some shops will also buy items off TNO and his party, and identify items for a price. Some merchants are so lax on security that they can be stolen from.

Shops don't all sell and buy at the same rates, thus can be differentiated by their sell markup and buy markup:

  • Sell Markup: The percentage of the base price of an item that the store will sell it for. For example, if an item's base price is 100 coppers, a store with a 120% sell markup will sell it for 120 coppers.
  • Buy Markup: The percentage of the base price of an item that the store will purchase it for. For example, if an item is worth 100 coppers, a store with an 80% buy markup will purchase it for 80 coppers.
  • Identify: The price the store will charge to identify something. It is usually 100 coppers.

Stealing can net free items, but there is always a risk. Some stores are so secure there is no opportunity to steal whatsoever. Other (or the same) merchant will never buy items from you that you have shoplifted.

  • Steal Failure: This percentage is subtracted from TNO's Pick Pockets rating. If TNO's Pick Pockets rating is 100% and trying to steal from a store with a 55% steal failure, he would only have a 45% chance of stealing an item successfully.
